Board Highlights - April 10, 2018

  1. Jenner Principal M. Brown and student Wyatt McLean spoke about a project Jenner junior high students have undertaken to improve the conditions of the Jenner cemetery that led them to the discovery of a single military grave belonging to James Tribe.  It was shared that the school has done considerable research about the soldier and been able to connect with his family to learn more about Tribe.    The school plans to continue work to clean up the cemetery and identify unlabeled gravesites.
     
  2. The Quarterly Financial Update was provided to the board as information.  Overall, the division is expecting the 2017-18 deficit to decrease by $137,710.  The less than projected deficit is due to increased Alberta Education revenues, for an overall projected deficit of $617,067 for the 2017-18 school year.  Fall budget projections were for a deficit of $754,777.
     
  3. Prairie Rose School Division has submitted, for approval, the creation of an Outreach school in Dunmore, called Rural Futures.  The division required formal board approval as part of the application process.  The school will be located in the building beside Division Office (currently being used by the Maintenance Department) in Dunmore that will also house a new Entrepreneurial program and a Before and After School Care program.
     
  4. The board approved revised policies GP 7 Regular Board Meetings, GP 8 Board General Committee Meetings and GP15 Trustee Development.
     
  5. The board voted in favour of selling the Oyen Administration building located at 113 2nd Avenue W, Oyen.  The division currently does not use the building, but rents it to an outside tenant.  The sale will be done through a public tender process, following two appraisals.
     
  6. The PRSD board approved the transfer of $400,000 from Unrestricted Operating Reserves to Instructional Restricted Operating Reserves to support the system strategies for the new PRSD goals, Literacy & Deeper Learning, for the 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years.
