November 2019 - Board Meeting Highlights

1.  Eagle Butte High School principal Mark Heinricks shared a presentation with the board about changes to the TAG program at the school.  This year the school has taken on the one school one book challenge in place of lessons during TAG time.  The book chosen is “A Dog’s Purpose.”  The book has 32 chapters and each week the TAG class, as a group, is assigned to read through one chapter.  Instead of focusing on literacy and reading, the goal is the build relationships, character and health and well-being in students.  A school modernization update was also provided.  The school is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2020.


2.  Superintendent Roger Clarke presented the 2019 fall Prairie Rose Accountability Pillar for information.  Overall, the division results are exceptional.  Of the 16 measures, 11 are listed as High or Very High.  Several measures are gathered from the spring parent Tell Them from Me results.  The fall results showcase both the PAT and Diploma marks from spring testing.


3.  Director of Inclusion Services Camille Quinton presented the Student Services Accountability Report for information.  The division continues to access and contribute services to RCSD (Regional Collaborative Services Delivery), that allows school divisions across the region to access speech language, OT and other health supports through a partnership approach.  Despite unpredictable budgets, it was noted that the division has been able to maintain services from last year’s level.  Other highlights of the report include the Family School Liaison Worker Program that resulted in 491 students visited and 6,417 student connections throughout the year, as well as Connect and Circle of Security training.  It was shared that funding for both DREAMS and REAL programs was eliminated this past summer.  Alberta Health Services South Zone has committed to continuing supports in those impacted school communities.  There is no timeline for when that programming will be implemented.


4.  Assistant Superintendent Reagan Weeks presented the Provincial Achievement Testing and Diploma Report for information.   2018-2019 PAT results showed a significant increase from the previous three-year average.  Overall, Prairie Rose results exceeded the provincial results at both the acceptable and excellence standards.  Diploma results also showed a significant increase, compared to the three-year average.  Literacy strategies and resources, instructional leadership development, technology initiatives, common assessments, and division’s goal of Deeper Learning to grow the student excellence levels were credited with helping drive the results.  It was also noted that PRSD colonies scored significantly higher than colonies across the province in the provincial PAT exams


5.  Other meeting notes:

  • The board approved a trip for Irvine School to travel to Quebec from May 18th to 25th.
  • Trustee Cathy Hogg was re-elected to another two-year term as Public School Boards’ Association president.
